Governance in Hyderabad

When I first came to BITS Hyderabad from Mumbai, I had a very optimistic picture in mind about Hyderabad being an amazing metropolitan city. But when I came here, I realized that the local train system here isn’t as active as it is in Mumbai. As Hyderabad enjoys a massive population of 9.5 million, it seems like a reasonable thing to expect the railways to get more attention. Now the Hyderabad Metro Rail is constructing overhead tracks for the metros, but the project appears to be taking a long time to reach completion.
When I came out of station, I saw many rickshaw people bargain with me. I said to myself, “why are they bargaining when they have a meter!” I realized later on that meters here are meant only for sure, and they don’t mean a thing.
In Mumbai I hated to travel via BEST bus (our local bus system). But after coming here, I really missed the BEST bus because the buses here are hopeless! So I guess the government in Hyderabad should focus a bit more on improving the transport system, because efficient transport saves time, and time is money.
Other things I would like to highlight is Cleanliness of Monuments. I visited places like Charminar. Ideally it is supposed to amaze me by its “charm” but the surroundings were so dirty that I would rather not go there again. Hyderabad is known for Charminar, so it is expected that the government takes proper care. It is surrounded by too many vendors. There is always a danger of pick-pocketers being in the crowd.
Even the Hussain Sagar Lake is very polluted. Let me clear your doubts by stating that now Hussain Sagar Lake serves as one of the main sewage collection zone of Hyderabad and Secunderabad cities.

Other Major civic problems include unsatisfactory sewerage system. Addressing a meeting at the commissioner’s office Minister for Rural Development Shri. Chaudhary Birender Singh said,"it appeared as if the city had become an orphan after abolition of the local bodies system."
Other critical environment-development issues in Hyderabad include:
  • improper solid waste management
  • traffic congestion and air pollution from vehicular sources
  • water pollution and especially contamination of the main recreational lake
  • uncontrolled industrial effluents
  • poor sanitation
  • inadequate water supply.
To deal with these civic problems, the government has duly encouraged the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan” in a bid to clean up the mess.
